  • What Should I Get For College?

    #1
I'm going to major in graphic design. Hopefully, at BYUI if i get accepted Im wondering what type of Mac I should get. I'd probably go with either the Macbook Pro or the iMac. They both are the same price (the system I'd get) [$1199]. So Im wondering if I should go with a laptop or Desktop computer with more functionality and better hardware. I have been told by a renowned graphic artist that I would be better off just buying the iMac because I'll end up going to the lab for class where they'll have macs for me, and then going back to my dorm, and even if I go somewhere, the point will be socializing more likely than working. What are your thoughts on this. I'm really in a dilemma.

My daughter has a laptop (13 MacBookPro) that the school outfitted for them. She brings it with her all the time and works. You may find that the portability serves you well for school.

I should add, that sucker is loaded with all the major design, 3D and animation softwares.

I went into graphic design and had the same dilemma - iMac or Laptop.

I ended up getting a laptop and it was very practical because I could go to my friends house, or Timmies (Canada's Starbucks - but better lol) and it was great in that sense. However, now that I'm working full time I got an iMac and I love it. The fact that you're in a dorm room I would definitely put my vote towards an iMac. You've got a bit more options in the sense that you can upgrade it and customize it. All you can upgrade on the macbooks are the RAM.

        Just my 2 cents.

          get both.
I'm not a fan of the iMac personally, though I haven't seen one with a matte screen. The glossy one drives me insane. We have one here (not my idea). I'm rather biased toward the tower for a stationary setting but that has a lot to do with what I do and how much junk I like to add to my production machine. Any chance on the MacBook that you can afford a larger screen? You'll find with design that desktop real estate is a premium. Palettes and toolboxes take up a lot of space and only resize down so far...

I just went through this discussion with my wife, because I need a new computer myself. My poor old Mac mini is beginning to get long in the tooth, so to speak.

While I thought that the portability would be a huge thing...how much are you going to be able to do on a screen that small? I would have ended up getting a dual monitor setup and and using it as a glorified desktop. 13in is not a lot when you talking about PS, ID, or AI with all of it's cool toolbars and palettes.

Personally, I am hoping to get the 21.5 iMac and an adapter to be able to use my other monitor. Personally, I think a dual monitor setup that I can use and flows well, will far outweigh any portability issues.

The iMac is by far the stronger of the two in my opinion.
While portability is nice, I wouldn't trade a desktop for a laptop if it was to be my only computer. Screen size really does matter when you're working on it for hours and hours on end.

I was in a similar situation last year.

I ended up choosing the 15" Macbook Pro, paired with an aluminum 23" Apple Display at my desk.
Essentially, I have an iMac at my desk and a laptop I can bring with me when ever I leave.

Portability is good - screen real estate is cruzial. If you're getting a laptop, get one with a large screen - and a proper backpack to carry it in... one with a strap over each shoulder.

This is what InDesign looks like to me after a while - I'm so slobby with panels you're not going to believe it.

                        Oh... GD.
They make the panels all connect together for a reason!

Hehe! I did say I was sloppy with them!

(and I do toggle them on/off or restart workspace. But this was honestly what it looked like last time I shut it down.)

Isn't that what a portfolio, online or physical is for?

And just like that heh, "My ideas cost money!"?

Sorry, I meant use the space they're in now, just to better effect. I like the actual layout of the poster; it's just not conveying the right mood yet.

Fair point. I was thinking I would have to replace the whole thing, but I certainly could keep some works and just swap out as needed.

So I'm considering it to study graphics design. I consider myself very creative and open minded but i'm not sure if this is what I should do? I've just Matriculated last year and need...

In regards to style I think it looks...well messy. It reminds me of something you would get doing autotrace. Strange shapes curves etc. I personally would like more hair like shapes. Nice smooth tapering...
