  • Portfolio Site Navigation Critique

    #1
Hello, I'm currently working on my portfolio site and wanted to know what you thought about the layout style of my current navigation. What's working and what isn't? Is it better to have the navigation links above the images or on the left side menu of them? Your help is greatly appreciated!

I think the navigation works fine. I would very highly recommend not using web-fonts for anything less than 16 points unless it is a very high quality font specifically designed for smaller sizes on the web. The hinting on Quicksand at smaller sizes is absolutely atrocious, and while it is going to appear ok on some screens and at certain resolutions, there will be some devices that it will be almost illegible on.

This is the second website someone has posted in the last couple of days using Quicksand. It is a nice looking font, but is not truly web ready. If you must go with a free font, you might want to look at Dosis. At thinner it weights it is far superior to Quicksand. Droid Sans, Source Sans Pro, Lato, PT Sans, and Proxima Nova, are other possibilities.

Thank you for your font suggestions. Actually, I was trying to get a font that most resembles Futura. I will look into those fonts.

Honestly, I tend to stick with common fonts. I know it's not artistic and it's kind of boring. But, that way you can be sure that everyone can read your site.

I would also be careful of your spacing. On the second index, it is harder to read because of the justification that seems to be going on.
