hey guys, what are your favourite fonts to use with black and white photography or sepia tone photos? I personally like to use typewriter fonts with sepia toned images.

Welcome to the forum arcticj.
Please read these important threads posted here. They will explain a lot about how the forum runs, from the rules and regulations to frequently discussed topics to the background on some of our lingo and inside jokes.
I hope you enjoy yourself!
It depends on the message I'm trying to convey for my client. I work in healthcare, which is a very forward-thinking, tech-heavy field. It wouldnt be appropriated for me to use typefaces from obsolete technology.
Now if I did a piece on the history of one of our hospitals I might consider it.

Hi arcticj, it really depends on the photo. Black and white photos can be taken of anything. The typeface chosen should suit the subject matter. The fact that it is black and white or sepia should be the first thing to consider when choosing a typeface.
You wouldn't ask what font to use for colour photos would you?
For example, contemporary wedding photos altered to sepia would not suit an eroded typewriter typeface.Last edited by Buda; 09-06-2010, 03:38 AM.

yeah i understand it depends on the client and subject matter, but for my personal use, i like grunge so i tend to accompany the image with an eroded typewriter font but i wouldn't dare use that font for a client whose putting together a wedding photo book but i know that some designers lean towards a set of fonts in regards to black and white and sepia. esp. when targeting certain age groups. i'm sorry, i should have been specific with my question.

Commented to Creating sketchy look or cross hatch in IllustratorYep, I would pencil sketch the basic shape and then use a black fibre tip pen on top. Kerm's suggestion of scanning and live tracing the result is good too.
