    I'm a big fan of Irfanview because it loads so fast, does a lot of silly things very quickly. Doesn't support CMYK colour space though.

    GIMP OMG still learning. CMYK plugin for GIMP is brilliant, not as easy as the PhotoShop colour mode switch unfortunately.

      I use paint.net and hugin for panoramas, they both are free

        Highly recommend IrfanView for any kind of batch processing (and wickedly fast, powerful contact sheet creation).

        Picassa is awesome for many things. I use it on our 50,000 plus image collection, believe it or not. And I find things in a fraction of the time my cohorts do using Bridge.

        But it all comes down to consistently applied archiving procedures -- like using meaningful directory names!
