  • How would you go about recreating these pieces of PEZ??? (Shading, 3D effects, etc)

I'm conceptualizing how to approach this challenge: recreating the PEZ candy pieces in illustrator. How would you go about it?

I've made a few attempts, but feel a bit too inexperienced to know how to go about this effectively.
I've used the pen tool to trace, then used the radial gradient and then tried created separate pieces to manually add the shadow, but I feel so far off. I've messed with the bevel/emboss, but that doesn't seem to be the right move either. The text is tricky too...

Here is the PEZ I'd like to recreate in Illustrator as discussed above:

Any insight would be so appreciated! Or if you've done a similar project, I'd really appreciate hearing about it!--

End goal is to better understand how to be thinking when using Illustrator and creating shadow and 3D effects. If I can better understand how someone would approach this or has done this kind of work before and can share their story, it'd help me become a better user of the software...

Illustrator isn't the best tool to do this, however, you could get photo-realistic results using gradient mesh(es).

Google: free logo mockup psd and you will find what you're looking for. If you look around that exact mock up is available for free. I have it myself but I can't think where I got it....

You could use most any 3D application, but something like this would be easy enough to do in Photoshop.

Hint: we interact with graphic communications far more often than we interact with graphic design communications.
