  • Indesign keyboard shortcuts failing

    #1
Most days I will find that my Indesign keyboard shortcuts fail to work. Relaunching Indesign fixes the problem easy, but is there a logical explanation?

In my day to day flailing about and wild thrashing at the keyboard have I entered some obscure sequence of keys to turn off my shortcuts?

This happens to one of my co-workers from time to time, the keyboard itself, not just the shortcuts, just stop working.

I have yet to figure out a clue as to what causes it. A restart usually fixes it, but still, it's very weird.

Have you trashed your prefs yet? You might try that because that's what it
sounds like. That or overwrite them with that handy set you saved once you got
ID "just right" a while back

Sounds like low RAM to me.

Indesign is a memory hog... When you get low on RAM, many functions just stop working.

        Or the prefs...

By any chance are you using Entourage?

Are there reported conflicts with Entourage and InDesign, PD? I had't heard that.

Yep. I'm not sure they haven't been ironed out by now but there were major keyboard short circuits when running Entourage and Adobe Creative Suite at the same time. Usually the shift key goes in the Adobe apps.

There may be a patch at Microsoft but that site is so cumbersome to try to find anything. I read somewhere just now that the old fix used to be to put your Entourage password in the Keychain. Entourage and Keychain. Two programs I have never used...Although I did open Entourage today by mistake. Clicky in wrong place in Excel. Oops...

I used to encounter this from time to time when working prepress due to recieving large volumes of files that had different prefs... We were using quack at the time, but maybe this might have something to do with ur prob. I had to trash the prefs constantly (I never figured out whether it was overwriting my prefs with each file or what....)

Was that Quark 5 maybe? Unstable piece of crap, that one. Always something messing up. I'm not hearing good things about 7. I've yet to actually load it.

I'm not using Entourage so that isn't it.

Wannabrie, that could be very likely since I do get many files from different designers.

Here is a great blog post and thread on InDesignSecrets.com with lots of info on this subject. Seems like it hits the mac platform more than windows, possibly related to the plethora of system-wide shortcuts in Tiger.

                        Thanks for the link Alan.

                        So it's not just me.

Clearly not! I've never run across it myself, and hadn't heard about it until I saw the same thing the other day on a mac system at the new office, but I'm not receiving ID files from multiple places, either.

InDesign Secrets (the site) rocks. The keyboard thing hasn't happened to me before, but it's happened to one of my co-workers.

InDesign Secrets sure is a great site. There is a reference there to Activity Monitor surveillance. This is a much-underrated "window". Had a huge problem a year ago with a rogue proram left there inadvertently by our [then] prepress vendor. Activity Monitor was the only way I nailed it. Jump in and pop it in your desktop corner for a while, just as an exercise. Can give a real insight if you're having a problem.

Exactly Garricks. Personally I don't think she would but I've learned you can't really trust anyone. That's what I did, I set the pdf options to crap, non-printing security on it and sent it directly...

What is it you're worried about, that she'll take the PDF and bypass you for printing? When i send stuff (other than to my vendors for production) I always use smallest file size. Looks fine on screen...

Securing them will work. You can decide whether or not to allow printing.

However, if someone really wants to bypass the security on a PDF, it's pretty simple to do.
