  • from photoshop to illustrator output EPS. HELP!

    #1
Hi all, I got a problem.
I did a work for a company and they ask for the final work to be a tif file, dpi 200, CMYK TIL 200%.
No problem, I opened photoshop cs (windows2000pro) and did the ad they requested.
I sent the cd with the file and after few days they called me that they want it as eps with layers and compatible with illustrator 8 on a mac.

Now my problem, I'm not too familiar with illustrator, I tryied both to open the psd or to import it in illustrator but in both cases a big mess. First the resolution is half the size, I didn't find any settting in illustrator to set the output resolution, in this case 200dpi.
From what I read in the manual if I open a photosho document illustrator gets the resolution based on the psd properties, but I don't get it, in photoshop is 1050x1750 and in illustrators turns to be 378x630.
In photoshop the actual size zoomed at 100% fills the screen, in illustrator at 100% is a 1/4 of the screen and the quality is orrible.
I tryied to create a file as large as the one in photoshop in pixels but when I placed the psd in it again the image was way to small that didn't fit in the document.

Basically what I'm supposed to to is to set the file with the text part as outlined in layers andeverything else as backgroung layer. Can I do this in photoshop without messing with illustrator and at the same time sure that the file is compatible with illustrator 8 on a mac (I use a pc and win2000) and the output resolution is the one I set in photoshop?

Unfortunally I have only 2 days to send them the new file.
I guess I have a lot to read.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advanced.

Did you try Placing the image into a document rather than trying to Open it?

Create a new doc in Illy.
    Goto File>Place
Select your image and set it on a layer.
    etc.

yes I use the place command, taht's what I meant by import.
I don't get it, I'm trying to incorporate bitmap images into illu, they are 5 megapixels photos, they look at 100% zoom like thet were below 640x480 I'm for sure missing something

whats the resolution of your bitmaps? illy defaults at 300dpi, so if your using low res images, they will be even smaller in Illy, make your psd's 300dpi and then place them in illustrator, that should work fine, i hope that helps!

i'm sure you've figured it out by now - or the company it was forwarded on to fixed it up for you - but what they want is VECTOR ART. pixel-based image in the background, and outlined vector text layered on top. and no, you cannot do that in Photoshop. next best thing is to give them editable layers in the PSD file and the artists at the printer can fuss with them. illustrator 8 imports the bitmap with the photoshop size and res properties, that's true, but one of the illustrator preferences settings is about 'using a low resolution proxy image for placed graphics...' or something or other. version 8 is OLD, i don't remember where that option is anymore. change it, and you'll get full-size, proper res placed files. but that doesn't fix the main prob. your printer needs vector art to overprint on top of a bitmap, and photoshop is just the wrong tool for that job. had they told you in advance that that is what they needed (for their print process), you could've done the background image in photoshops and exported it as a TIFF. place that into an illustrator file, then set vector text however you want to on top and then either convert to outlines or - if it's okay with your printer - flatten it. they'd be thrilled. but they need to tell you that BEFORE you start designing. otherwise, it's really not your problem.

Yum. I do love salmon sandwiches. The bakery near me do great smoked salmon bagels. It's not a bagel shop so they don't jack up the prices.
