  • Illustrator Blend - 3D effect problems

    #1

I am experimenting with the blend mode of Adobe Illustrator, but I have some problems creating a 3D effect. I think the problem is with the fake light effect that I am trying to create on the heart.

Does anyone have some advice to create a good fake 3D effect for this hart with Illustrator?

It si the shape and direction you are looking at the heart.
If you look at something head on and eye level you are not going to see much dimension
You have to play with the way you are making your blends.
Don't make them so centered, and where the white is the red around the white is throwing it off
You have a good start though, just a little tweaking

Thanks for this information, would you tweak the white part just to create a creative shape or?

What do you mean by "trowing it off"

Does annyone know some good tutorials to create these fake "3D" effectes?

It goes from the red heart to a totally different red around the highlights to white.
Dont put any red on the highlights just use your scale of white for a nice blend 100%-0%

lkw, gradient meshes look pretty on the web and on your screen, but they can be a royal pain to print correctly, seps or no seps. Blends don't create transparency like meshes do (which is why you see the steps in a blend). Blends also make it easier, for me in particular, to apply the correct colors to both ends of the blend to match the oh so important PMS numbers that are usually in there (don't know about you sep type printers...).

Jakke you have a good start there. Just don't go too big when using blends. The steps will become real noticeable in an object that is over 8 to 12 inches in dimension.

              To PrintDriver:

Yeah I've run into that problem with the gradient mesh. Maybe they'll fix it some day. I recently used a gradient mesh on a two color job. It works fine if your mesh contains only one PMS color. Anything beyond that, you will have to build the mesh using CMY or K, then specify to your printshop what PMS color substitutes the CMY or K.

I constantly use the InDesign 'output preview - separations' feature to check my separations of Illustrator files. Not sure why Illustrator doesn't have the same window. Maybe there is a way in -print preview- that I haven't discovered.

Anyway, nice little feature for those of us doing two and three color work.
              Thank you InDesign

                ???
Oh, wait, you're talking about separating to plates to print with spot color, right?
Doesn't work so easy in digital. No plates.
And a lot of people don't bother to actually pick a pms color. They go the quick and easy route of mixing whatever looks nice using the color bars and forgetting to add it to the color palette where we can change it if we have too. But that's a whole nuther rant someday.

Sorry for hijacking your thread Jakke.
