  • Acrobat Mask?

    #1
I'm trying to create bleeds on a document that a client sent us. Everything was successful except for expanding certain images beyond 1/2 inch from each side. The background image expands past this just fine.

When I edit the images that I can't get to extend to the edge in Illustrator, I find that there is some sort of mask on them that only allows it to display a part of the full graphic. Even after expanding or deleting that mask, I cannot get the graphic to display to the edge.

Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Any tips on what I can try to get these images to extend to the edge?

Release the compound path or clipping mask that is applied to the element.

Aaaaand exactly how do I do that?

      (sorry, I'm a programmer, not a designer!)

Right click if you're on a PC, or Command click if you're on a mac, on the object in question.
If a clipping mask or compound path is attached to it then the option to "release" it will be shown.

Thanks - that appeared to solve the problem within illustrator, but once saved, the problem still existed in the PDF.

I've deleted a bunch of stuff from the PDF and have left only the troubled areas. Could someone take a look at it for me? Try moving the swirls towards the borders.

          Thank you!

did you save it out as a eps or ai file instead of a PDF?

I'm looking at it right now.

usually when I want to make minor changes to an existing PDF, I right mouse click the object, go to edit object, make my changes in Illustrator, and save. Once saved, acrobat reads the temporary file and replaces the edited object with the new one.

Just release the clipping mask... then if you need to manipulate them again, they are grouped, so just ungroup them.

Then just save it out as an ai or eps and it should be fine.

sorry, from Acrobat 9. The client isn't kind enough to provide us with the original inDesign file.

hm... don't have Acrobat 9... why not just take the entire PDF into Illustrator and edit it?

Also... are you printer for this piece? Cause if there is a change I would insist that the client do it and send a new PDF or provide the working files.

Funny story, actually! They fired their designer when my boss told them we can do it all in-house. Luckily we have a large staff of graphic designers on hand... oh... wait.. we're all programmers...

We often only get PDFs of what they want us to print, since they don't know where the original source is and have no idea how to make the changes themselves.

Back onto this file, I can't load it into Illustrator because we don't have the font they used. I guess worse case I could go out and buy the missing fonts, but I was hoping that there would be an easier way.

                        Appreciate all the help

                          wow... painful.
I'd just get the font. Screw trying to mess with PDF's. It's just a bad idea.
