I have a circle using the radial gradient fill...is there a way to control where the white is located ie. where the lightsource appears to be?

Double click on the dropdown rectangle with the picture of the gradient on the top toolbar. Then you can move the sliders to edit the gradient.

that only moves the width of the spotlight...but doesn't let me move it from the center...using the linear gradient fill, there is the option to control the angle...but the radial fill only seems to have one option...big or small....

No you haven't. With the object selected, click on the gradient tool. Then click and hold the mouse button down on the place where you want the gradient to start and drag to where you want the gradient to stop (you'll see a line connecting your start point and your cursor. Depending on how you have your grade set up if it's dark at the starting point or light. Might take a few tries to get it right.

The grade is squashed into the length of the line. If you keep the line within your object, the grade start and end points bleed out to the edges of the shape. If you go outside your object the grade will stop at whatever point your object clips the path.

          Play.
