  • Loss less Conversion of AI to CRD files

    #1
Recently I designed a brochure in IllustratorCS5 for screen printing. But the print people accept only CorelDraw files, so i converted .ai to crd. I had used the colour 3A9E46(Green) a lot in .ai file. Strangely enough, in the .cdr all graphics done in this colour appeared in another shade of green.

So now my question is: How come that colour is displayed in different shades? Can anyone give me solution for loss-less conversion from .ai to .crd...?

Hi Haarik and welcome to GDF!

3A9E46 is a web color. You'll have to choose a color system solid color for screen printing, like Pantone Solid or Process (depending on how many colors & what screen printing technique you're using).

Thank you for your reply, garricks. But i don't know much about that color system. Can I get Pantone Colors if I make adjustments in ColorSettings in illustrator...? If yes, could you please explain what I should do....? This my current ColorSettings...

Well they're going to be screen printing it - unless they are doing full colour screen printing - the colour you pick will have to be swatched to match.

I suggest you adjust the colour green and print it out so you get the colour as close as you can - you can then send them that printed sample and they'll have to swatch the colour to match.

Using a Pantone book would be better, as you can tell them "I want it Pantone 362C" and they can go get their Book and then compare their swatch samples to that, so you then you get the colour you need.

Bottom line is - talk to the printers about concerns in the shades of green.

No you can't adjust to pantone using the color settings.
            Use the swatch palette.
My guess is no matter what palette you use the colors will appear different on screen between Illy and Corel because I'm betting your profiles are mismatched.
But it doesn't help to be using an RGB web color to begin with.

BTW, it's far simpler for a silkscreener to match a PMS number than it is for them to match a laser print. There might not be a PMS chip that matches the laser print, which means a custom color match rather than a formula match. That'll cost you some extra bucks.

I used to mix inks in my first job as a screen printer. We had to match all sorts of colour samples. It wasn't particularly hard, the process took about 30 minutes.

But that was a long time ago lol

might take 30 minutes to mix a custom color.
It takes about 5 to do a pantone mix by weights.

I have to say, just the title of that tut makes me shudder. There are millions of CMYK color combinations and less than 2000 pantone colors. You will be off. Especially if they are using a special CMYK mix for one printer that looks like a Pantone color on whatever the printer is printing on, but doesn't have the same values as the actual Pantone color. If a client wants a perfect match, this method will not work.

As for your color shifting. Your profiles are probably mismatched.

On looking for instructions on using the same profile from Illustrator in Corel or something along those lines, I came across a number of tutorials that were in fact a complete load of nonsense. One irritated me so much that I just posted a rant on how ridiculous the tutorial was. No wonder there are so many bad practices out there by people! Absolutely disgraceful.

The the OP I suggest you buy a book on Illustrator and on Corel and read up on what colour profiles you should be using.

You also need to talk to your printers about the colour issues and concerns.

I found this 2010 post at Corel that may point in the right direction re color profiles in Corel.

Bob could probably add some insight too.
But it seems to me a little RTFM is in order.

Colour management is very difficult thing to grasp when you don't know anything about it. I agree they need to read the manual. And get a book on not only Illy and Corel, but also on Corel.

Lynda.com has a very tutorial on colour management which I also recommend.
