  • Monaco EZ color vs PrintFix Pro

    #1
I am deciding between these 2 calibration packages and would appreciate some feedback from anyone that has experience with either of these entry level packages.

Some background info: Majority of my work will end up printing offset, but I do short-run work in-house on a HP color laserjet. I have dual LCD monitors that desperately need calibrating.

    Thanks in advance!

          I calibrate ours visually.
Find a printed piece, a GOOD color printed piece.
          Eyeball it from there.
          That's what I've always done.

            >>Find a printed piece, a GOOD color printed piece.<<

From a GOOD printer! A good place to start is to find the printer who most consistently closely matches their colour proofs through a wide colour/stock range.

As for the picture subjects-- I'd avoid the classic 'swatch book' type of shots featuring unrealistic setups-- the old Adobe one with the senorita and the fruit salad sombrero comes to mind. Concentrate on a good, average shot.

Gamma is probably the most important thing to actually calibrate. From there, I tend to just have to make a very slight tweak now and then as the CRT ages. LCDs? That's one of the reasons I've avoided these for serious colour work to date. The last time I looked their colour fidelity was still no match for a good CRT. Are there any real serious challenges to this opinion now out there?
