  • Getting into the third dimension

    #1
Hi all, this is my first post, so I hope I'm putting it in the right place and not offending anyone's delicate sensibilities!

I work as a graphic designer for a sign company and a regular feature of my job is creating visualisations of branded canopies and awnings superimposed on photographs of bar and shop fronts.

Typically I work in Corel Draw and create the illlusion of depth and perspective, having adjusted the photo in Photoshop. It's important that the branding appears reasonably accurately from the angle visualised, as I also have responsibility for the finished print (i.e. I can't write visual cheques that my literal ass can't guarantee).

The turnaround on these jobs is savagely pressurised, and I've been doing it long enough to manage it fine.

However, my problem arises when the end customers , in their infinite wisdom, decide they want to "see the underneath of the canopy" or ask "can you turn it around a little bit and reduce the projection" etc, which often necessitates a complete redraw.

So, and sorry for taking so long to get to the point, what I'm looking into is a simple and straightforward way of creating 3D models, at speed, for 2D rendering. I've used Sketch Up and find it a little awkward. Being unable to output as a vector is a minus, although I appreciate this is an unlikely feature.

Anyone have any ideas for software or to improve my work flow?
