hey all, ive just decided to do my dissertation on :

is the writing on the wall for printed media in a digital world?
(how the printers will cope etc, e book e news etc.)

what would be your response to this and do you feel it would be a good argument to write 10,000 words on? im based in UK would mainly be Uk based research.

sounds like it could be interesting, but maybe a bit subjective. (course, that might be a good thing in a dissertation!)

what types of resources are you using for your research?

Until the vast masses have computers or televisions, paper in its various forms is here to stay.
      10000 words?
You are really gonna have to get into the industry magazines and even they only offer an article or two a year touting the end of paper. And that is usually cuz someone came up with a new crystal type viewscreen.
      Good luck.

looks like u and me are in same boat! iv just been researching my Dissertation question, wat a bitch!

sounds like a plan, lots of evidence to back to up on to, from books, Internet, Design websites, mags. it all in!
i think your proposed question has got some meat to it, and i think the answer to the question is yes, old modern printing process will be no longer available by 2010, even if it lasts that long. Digital is here, and its changing everything it can, as everything is 'e' - something noe e.g email, ecards, ebanking enewspapers!

        good luck wi it all!

I seriously doubt printing will be extinct in the near future. There always has and always will be books. There is always a need for the 'hard copy'. And a printed book is way more accessible than an ebook. Although you may perceive that technology will destroy the print process, it can only help speed it up and make it more efficient than it has ever been. I see a day when there will be bio-mechanical printers, who will progammed to punch you if you get the dpi wrong or don't colour seperate properly. oof.

Be careful here in terms of your references. In my experience, universities don't like references to websites as they are often not traceable and are the opinions of the author, but this may be the major source of your information. However, you may struggle to find references on this topic in 'university approved' sources. Unless, of course, you do your own primary research to back them up; interview lots of working designers, printers and possibly web and multimedia designers to see what they think. You may struggle to get 10 000 words out of though, but good luck!

Our university doesn't have a problem with web references. Obviously message boards and 'my first digital web page' don't really count. Valid resources are The Guardian, Independant etc. or just the web equivalent of books and magazines. which is ironic considering the question!

I dont agree that printed media will be extinct by 2010. People like to have something tactile that they can get hold of, touch, pull, fold, rip, tear, whatever. As advanced as emedia will become, it just can't compare to print.

You know, I have the option of receiving all of my bills electronically or by mail... I choose to get every single one of them by mail.
What happens when we've ensured that everything is handled through the internet and then we lose power for a few days? Here in Upstate NY it happens quite a bit because of the blizzards we get 6 months out of the year.

As useful a tool as the internet is, it can not completely replace paper.

I was thinking about the people, some of whom are my own neighbors, who don't even own a computer - or can't afford one. They still read the morning paper. Imagine that?
No, I don't see print becoming extinct.

a friend who recently went back to uni commented the other day how different this degree is stacking up to her first one, in terms of research. she hasn't once had to go to a library - all of her resources and references have been supplied to her by the university online.

                      i thought that was scary.

That is crazy, Unc! I'd be pissed.

Maybe over a large amount of time we will evolve to adapt to an increasingly digital world, but I personally don't enjoy reading on a screen nearly as much as I do with a book or magazine. It hurts my eyes after a while. Therefore I believe that print media will always have a place in society.

                        But good topic, good luck!

I actually ended up going with RichCopy. It's free, only overwrites files that have been changed since last backup (quicker backups,) and doesn't compress or pack the files. My brother who is an IT tech...
