  • How do I create this style of 3d pie chart...easily?

    #1

Howdy. Does anyone know how I can create a 3d pie chart with this sort of shading and lighting? I have worked with the 3d filter in IllustratorCS and used the 3d chart in PowerPoint but no success in getting this muchvariation in the shading. I even exported the chart from Ill to PS to add more shading but that is going to be too much work for the amount of charts I have to do. I am working on an annual report and this style of chart was one of the first things my client requested. Remember simple solution. They will even spring for special software so they can create it in the future.

you should be able to do it in Illustrator using gradients.

That's definitely doable but I am looking at doing mass quantities with limited time. Thnx.

Doesn't Illustrator have a pie chart option, where you put in the numbers and it will build the chart for you?

        I think it does.

If I went to strictly 3d software, does anyone know what would be best/easiest to use? Just checking options.

CorelDraw. The extrusion tool allows you to 3D rotate, shade, bevel, and add three spotlights to a vector object. The interactive fill tool makes adding finishing gradients to the pie 'tops' a snap. And everything remains editable.

As for creating the pie 'segments' as graphed components-- the easiest way in CorelDraw is to use the numerical input boxes that appear on the context toolbar when you select an ellipse. If I have to create a pie slice that is, say, $4,521 out of a total pie of $23,453, I just enter this into the numeric segment angle box:

4521/23453*360 and then ENTER. The pie slice then adjusts to that ratio. Actually, you're better off making the 'slices' before going to the Extrude tool, but it's quite fast (and, incidentally-- part of the basic CorelDraw package for over 10 years).

Illustrator will be your best bet. I'd use the pie chart tool, then use the Stylize functions (inner glow, drop shadow, etc, etc) to get the desired effect. You can also change the angle and distort to show perspective.

Let's see...it sounds like most of you are saying do it in Illustrator. Hmmm... Perhaps i'll use this Illustrator. Thanks for your input. If anyone else has knowledge of 3d software feel free to chime in but for now i'll stick with Illustrator. Keep in mind my client will buy a cool 3d toy for me if I request it. You know, because I 'need' it. Thnx.

Hey, another route that's fast and cheap is to cut and paste a 3D pie from Excel to AI and add grads there.
