Ouch. Glad you are ok though. Real bummer about the cash. Are you able to pay in installments? Christmas time is hard without these added "bonuses".

I hadn't considered installments, Buda. It's worth a shot, thanks! I've always paid them when I pick up my car so I don't know if they do that.
I've never gotten a bonus at this job. They are aware of my predicament so maybe this year it will happen! I'm determined to keep positive!
I'm glad I'm ok, too! The guy in the truck I almost hit is glad, too!

Glad you're safe cornfed! Must have been really scary.
Perhaps the mechanic is willing to barter some graphic design work? New business cards, some newspaper ads, shop signs...?

Sounds like the steering fluid pump, but that surely shouldn't cost $700 to replace. Maybe the mechanic's trying to squeeze out a little extra Christmas cash for himself.

Ouch sorry to hear that Cornfed, I had something similar but it wasn't exactly as yours. It was electrical and since everything is power this and that it could a possibility for you. Has your mechanic explored for faulty wiring ?

No deals, no payment plans! $1000 up front! He's been my regular mechanic for over 10 years and is by far the most honest in town so I'm trusting him. The diagnosis is that my oil leak has destroyed my brakes. Oil leak = 700, brakes = 300. Yowza! I don't understand how either of those caused me to lose control of steering but geez, at this point, I'm kinda scared to ask! I know they are all up in my wheel well today so if they find something more I'm sure they'll fix it.
To my mechanics credit, in the past if I've had a hard time, they have allowed me to order my own parts to ease the bill. This time that wasn't an option. Most of the bill is labor.

wowsa. that stinks.
I know we had a timing belt issue a few months back: $1600. and it shouldn't have happened but the one time we went to Pep Boys they installed a shield wrong and it was slowly slicing our belt.
get a candy cane and hand over when you go to pick up your car and say "Merry Christmas" when you pay.

I went to PepBoys to install a new alternator once. They put it in backwards. I'll never go there again for engine repairs.

yeah, Pep Boys was not our normal thing, we have a few mechanics we trust, but the issue was the water pump and it was close to wife's work...never again.
