Using a screen of Pantone 877 instead of metallic paper
Hello all,
I recently read posts about printing with 877.
Currently, my printer's rep is recommending using a screen of 877 with an aqueous coating in place of the beautiful metallic paper I prefer. (costly)
Has anyone tried this? and what result might I expect?

Metallic inks are costly too but I don't see why it shouldn't work. It'll probably look fab.

I have not tried this before.
Is there any chance that your print rep can provide a sample to show you what it looks like before you commit to a costly print run?
What will you do with the paper once it's done? I presume that you'd be printing something else on it? I didn't think that you could print on top of an aqueous coating.

If you go for it let us know how it turns out. I'm curious as I haven't heard that one before?

I was assuming that the print job included the silver screen to approximate the paper, not creating the paper to then be printed on again, is that correct?
And yes Love, what Morea said, if they suggested it, they must have tried this before and have a sample.

i wouldn't screen 877 metallic ink... From my experience with flexo, the flecks of silver can caught in the anilox and won't always produce an even screen, either that or they might have to print at a lower lpi.
if you are trying to achieve the look of metallic silver stock, Flood coat regular stock with 877 and overprint everything else on top.

That's what I was thinking. Screens of metallics general don't look that good.
But maybe you can request a sample and see for yourself.

Yes Pointy Hat, you are correct that the 877 is to simulate the metallic paper.
I recently asked for a sample; as the proof is in the puddin'.
It is for this year's holiday card.
Someone else suggested flooding the paper with 877 then printing on top.
Wouldn't it be difficult to print on top of the 877?
Regarding the printing company: they are large, professional and modern. We have dealt with them for several years.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I came back to this thread because I realized you said "screen" of 877, I would think that may look crappy. And I wasn't the only one. What other colors are in the piece? Silence you wouldn't trap to the metallic?
