a missmatch of something.
If you are using a printer provided dieline, it is sometimes saved as a different profile than what you need for your artwork.
So go back to the printer and ask them if it is ok to copy the dieline to a new document and place it over the PSD file in that new document.

Could be a combination of things, pixel preview? Document raster effect settings?

Are you saving your dieline with the art placed as an EPS file, perhaps? Or are you using Illustrator as your layout and final file?
If it's the former, you could just be looking at a low-resolution preview image and that's why it looks so bad.

Longboy-I am using illustrator to do the layout and then place the photoshop piece in it. Until the prepress gal said something about it looking like it was really low res even though it was at 300dpi, I just thought the same thing, it only looked low-resolution and would be clearer when printed. I started getting concerned when she started asking for the art over and over because it just didn't look clear. But everytime I sent it I sent a copy to myself to see if I could see the same thing and it never looked so bad. I just found it odd that I got a really crisp piece until it went on the dieline.

Try what Moni said, check your Raster Effects setting with the die-line file open.
It should be at the top of your Effect menu.

Try it at a higher resolution. One that your printer recommends for output at actual print size.

Ok...when I opened the new die-line and checked the Raster Effects it was set at 300ppi. I placed the art on the die-line, it looked good, checked the raster effects once again and it still remainded at 300ppi. I went to save it and this is the warning that came up:
"The document raster effects resolution is 72ppi or less. Fonts with appropriate resolution bits will be embedded. and over prints will not be preserved in areas that interact with transparenc.
Don't have a clue on what that means.
