different levels of color saturation in browser images

Recently I've noticed that the color saturation of the photos I upload to my blog or other sites are presented differently, from browser to browser, and OS to OS... confusing but I guess expected. But now I see it within a selection of images I produced in the same way and on within the same blog...!

on my post here:
http://guykeulemans.blogspot.com/2009/11/smash-repair-3-photostudio-images.html

there are 4 photos. Saved from photoshop as JPGs with the Adobe RGB color profile embedded. The color saturation all look pretty much the same in photoshop. On the blog post, they all look pretty much the same (but desaturated). But when you click through to the full size image, they differ in color saturation, some dramatically.

Can someone explain what I am doing wrong? And a simple way to get the most accurate color?

(By the way, I used to use Save for Web in photoshop with ICC profile selected, but had the same problem of desaturation....)

all help very much appreciated

Some browsers support image profiles. Others ignore them. Safari will honor profiles. I think Firefox normally doesn't (unless you install special a plug-in). I don't know about IE.

Each OS may be using different display profiles, even if they were connected to the same monitor. Of course, there also will be variance across different monitors.

thanks, that makes sense.

But whats best practice then? Save for Web with ICC? Still seems to be inconsistent for me......

Save for Web out of Photoshop automatically discards any ICC profiles, and your images are saved in the sRGB RGB space, which is what most browsers use. For consistency, you should probably stick with Save for Web rather than using Save As out of Photoshop.

In Save for Web, there is a ICC profile selection box, but I guess if sRGB RGB is the most common profile, not ICC, that would explain the inconsistancy.

Thanks, I'm gonna resave those files with the sRGB RGB profile and see how I go.

wow. crash course in web graphics. did not know all this stuff because I come from print graphics.

I've now changed my screen gamma to 2.2 and will convert all my photoshop files to RGB sRGB before saving. I read also that for web work its recommended to disable all color management of RGB images in photoshop. Anyone else do that? Does it have no effect on processing CMYK for print?
