Need some opinions please

Hello everyone,

At college I was given a brief where we had to design a front cover and two double page spreads for designweek. The artwork was based on the building of my college and I messed about with it a little in illustrator as shown below. The spreads I did were bad at the time and I don't like them, I don't want to redo the spreads because I feel the content itself was boring. I think the piece would be better if it didn't have the massive designweek logo there and was on its own. However if I were to put it on its own is there anything I can do to it so that it makes sense in my portfolio?

The reason am I asking for help is because I'm putting my portfolio together.

I would appreciate anyone's opinion very much.

Kind Regards,

Chris

if you take the design week info off i think the artwork would lose its purpose. the artwork looks really cool imo, but as a stand alone piece it doesn't really show much design skill. if you want to put it in your portfolio you can always change it up to your liking.

If it were a portfolio for an artist to show illustrations it is ok by itself. But I think for a GD portfolio you need to show how the graphic was used. I like it, although I'm not keen on the faded blue shapes in the background.

I like the illustration as an art piece, but maybe the article title could relate better to the image? Like, make it about architecture, or navigating the urban jungle? I agree that it needs to look like a mag cover to show purpose and how it was used. I also agree that those 2 blue bands are out of place.

Thank you so much for your opinions, I appreciate it.

I definitely agree about the blue bands, I don't know why I added them at the time really.

I also moved it up slightly more vertically so it is more central in the magazine cover. I like the idea of creating a different article about architecture. I shall have a play around with that concept as it seems more interesting the current article which is about students opinions on their careers after college.

Just after I posted this and before I read any of your advice I decided to add it to a t-shirt as well. Not sure what you think.

I guess I could always add this to my folio as well as the magazine cover and double page spread. Personally I wouldn't wear the t-shirt, but in terms with the competition on the site I don't think it's too bad. Any thoughts?

Thanks again.

Edit: Apologies! I didn't want to add to many images to the page incase it took up too much loading but your right.

Chris, you should really post the t-shirt here rather than linking to it. It's easier for us to crit like that, and many members won't bother clicking on a link.
