Question More help with computer findings

I know this may make me sound like a real novice with computers but i never studied the interior of a computer. So my question is ...How exactly do i tell if a computer has a good Processor.

Thank you for the help

Good as in "it works" or good as in "fast enough"?

Is the computer running or is it torn apart?

I miss the good old days when it was fairly easy to figure this out. You had your 486 which was better than the 386. Then when they came out with the 586 they decided to call it the Pentium which sounded much cooler than 586. It was still easy to rate them though since it was Pentium then Pentium II then Pentium III then Pentium IV. Between Pentium's you went by htz, a 90 htz Pentium was faster than 60 htz Pentium etc, etc. Then they started throwing multiple cores into the mix and now they just seem to call them random letter number combinations like i7-940. Of course the next one won't be i8-940 or i7-941, it will be some other random thing like QWErTY 35874584521.

Then just to make it even more complicated you have all these variations like Celeron and Atom and Xeon and Itanium processors. Each with it's own set of confusing versions and numbers.

higher price mainly has a better processor...though not always.

find a couple computers in your price range. list the specs here and see what others have to say

the core "i" series like kool was talking about is a pretty good benchmark. look for at least a core2duo, but lean toward "quad core" or something like that. if you see the word "extreme" in the processor name, it's a good chip but it's really geared towards gaming -- though for years, if you got a good gaming rig chances are it would be a good design machine, though we have no use for an overclocked video card of physix engine...

These are actually pretty easy:

Celeron - a cheaper version of whatever processor Intel is currently using. Almost inevitably junk that you should never buy.

Atom - A low power processor for things like netbooks.

Xeon - Basically a "professional" version of whatever Intel's current processor line is. Only really used for servers or high-end workstations. Probably a lot of money for something you don't need.

Itanium - designed to be Intel's next-generation processor architecture, but everyone hated it and no one bought it. Often nicknamed "Itanic."
