Interesting Sign Painting article
Ran across this and liked the images. Cool info on older sign painters, how they learned, typography, what it took to be great, etc.

I wonder if using a pounce pattern is considered cheating?

I never really thought about graffiti as a gateway or a new take on sign painting. I guess if you did calligraphy, sign painting and graffiti, you'd have some awesome skills up your sleeves.
I watched an old dude do a window display the other day. He started with this chalk based marker and just scribbled onto the glass to the rough placement of the letters but all the design of the characters and thick/think lines and fonts was done with the paintbrush. So cool. I think spacing and alignment would be hard....and kerning that you could live with.
