It was a trip.
I just had a feeling, was hearing a dripping noise, and hired another plumber who came in and fixed it. (And freaked out, saying if this had let go the entire sheet rock wall would've come down etc etc etc)

Gotta love those quick fix contractors

It's a lucky thing you found it before it failed completely and flooded you out! I know the inspectors can't be expected to catch every little thing, but that's so obvious there's no excuse.

We had a somewhat similar plumbing surprise that waited more than 5 years after we moved in to manifest itself. Someone had connected a short piece of galvanized steel pipe between the copper supply lines and shut-off valves to the washing machine. Galvanic corrosion between the different metals eventually ate the steel pipe. It never leaked prior to that either. One day it just shot the entire fitting right off the wall! They should have used a brass fitting instead of the galvanized pipe.

Luckily I was home at the time and immediately heard the sound of gushing water and got it shut off about a minute after it happened.
