Best publishing software for PC? What are you producing? Right now as it stands if you are starting fresh I would go with Adobe InDesign. Yeah sure it costs more but if you bringyour printer a Publisher file he will like you and repect you even less than he already does )

So...what is it you are designing? How many pages etc.? Just curious )

Mostly magazine stuff. I already have Photoshop 7, and I'm doing the magazine work with that, page by page. :O

Oye!!! No you don't wanna do that! UGH! You need an actual layout program! Well worth the investment! Not to mention that your text will be much much clearer if its not in Photoshop. What kinda file are you saving these photoshop docs for the printer as? Approx how many pages per issue?

If you are doing mostly magazine layouts I would strongly suggest InDesign or Quark. Allthough if you don't know either of these programs then I would say go with learning and purchasing InDesign. You need layout software. Photoshop is great but not for magazine layouts ) You can check out InDesign and even get a demo at www.adobe.com or you can get the same with Quark at www.quark.com

Yeah, I know it's a pain. The magazine's printer (this is my 1st job) asks for the pages to be in TIFF format...They actually end up looking not bad at all. But organizing the layout is a major pain in the royal butt.

So...Between InDesign and Quark...which one do you recommend? Will InDesign be easier for me to learn since I'm pretty proficient with PS?

Ewwe yeah I would hate to layout copy in Photoshop. Save yourself now Kerc!!! ;o)

We have like a billion InDesign vs Quark debates and you can search the forum and find them but most on here recommend InDesign for layout now. I am a Quark user myself but IF I could switch us at work over to ID then I would in a heartbeat! I have learned InDesign pretty easily so far on my own and if you are familiar with other Adobe products then I would think it would be fairly easy for you to learn. If you have never touched Quark, then I wouldn't. Just go with InDesign. ) Of course you may wanna check with your printer first to be sure they can accept those files, or you can make PDF files of the doc which is what I normally do anyways bc that is what my printer prefers.

And what about PageMaker? Is it true that it is very unstable? I ask because for now my budget is a bit limited...

Yeah..you don't wanna mess with PageMaker I don't think. It's not really worth the headache...ugh. I think its very unstable. I have never liked that program. I own a version of it and never even touched it, it's v6.0 I THINK...LOL..it just happened to come in a package deal of software that I got from Adobe.

Are you on a Mac or a PC?

I am sure there are some members on the board with more experience in PageMaker than me because I honestly haven't used in in a long time and they can probobly tell you alot more about it than I can. Once I used Quark I just didn't look back at PageMaker. Now I want to move to InDesign.

I know budget is an issue ( Don't we always wish that it wasn't ;o)
