Why is Sherlock only for web search now?

We got our upgrades earlier this year, and with it a new version of Sherlock. We've always used Sherlock to search our server (Windows 2000) and it worked great. But this new version doesn't seem to give us the option to search our server. Only the web.

And the search feature on Panther is REALLY slow. We have resorted to running over to an old computer running OS 9.2 and the old version of Sherlock to search.

Anyone have any advice?

I've searched versiontracker.com and found one thing that sounded good, but it didn't work right.

hummm. I haven't had a problem with the new search feature. As fast as Sherlock was. you might just have a lot of crap to go through

Yes, there's no doubt about that. We have thousands and thousands of images we go through every day. But Sherlock had to run through all the same info as the search feature in Panther does. It's just frustrating that it takes so much longer than Sherlock did.

I don't understand why Sherlock could've kept that feature. I wonder if we just have a weird version of it or something.

Nope. That's Sherlock for you on OSX. Sad, isn't it. But it does have a lot of really cool, useful features that the previous one didn't.

I also miss the search feature.

And yes, the search is slow now. Almost like being back on Windoze (sigh). Each new version of X has improved though. And if the previews of Tiger prove to be true, it'll blow away any other search program out there.

Funny, I have four 160GB drives all running in my Dual G4 with over 20,000 files of all different sizes and types... Sherlock burns through them all in just a few seconds.

My Win XP box cannot even choose a location when I want to attach something to an eMail. The Insert File window stops responding. Five minutes later (no lie) the drop down menu shows up for a split second and then I have to start over.

Agreed, the new Tiger finder is gonna smoke!

Oh, wait a minute... my bad... I don't use the Sherlock application. I use the hotkey Command+F and search that way. It's soooo much faster. Sorry for the confusion :-(

Just out of curiosity, what kind of processor do you have, though, and what kind does the original poster have, because we may not be talking apples and apples here (no pun intended), since the speed of the search is going to rely to a large extent on what MHz and how much RAM you guys have, I would think. Also, filing has a lot to do with the search as well. I am a freak for proper filing.

But in answer to your question, I am running a Dual 867 G4 PowerMac with the 867 to 1.25 GHz solder mod enabled. I also have 1.25 GB of RAM installed. My drives are all 10,000 RPM ATA drives.
