Quark (5 - for PC) caption for images

Is there a way to add a caption to an image. I thought there was a way to do this. Typing "caption" in Quark's help gives no results. I expedted this to be an option. Thanks in advance.

Are you trying to type text below the image or over it? Either way, most captions or photo credits are just additional text boxes with a different size font in them.

I was sure I replied to this earlier today, but I guess not. I want the text 'Below' the image. Until it's decided where the resting place for the images is going to be, they are being moved. I want the caption text to move with it. I want the body of the remainder of the document to flow around the image. Does that make more sense?

Yeah what PD said....basically you have to make a text box, set your background for it to transparent, adjust your runaround and place it where you want it. If you wanna move it with your image just group it with that image and move it wherever.

Just to make it quicker to get to...make on of the caption boxes how you want it and place it in a library. Then next time you need one, all you have to do is pull it outta the library and then type the new caption in- that way you will already have the background set to transparency, have the size you want and everything. It just speeds up the process of those pesky lil format issues.

I'm curious d-zine ... as to why you mention the transparent background - In this case, it's a small article that'll be going into a scientific magazine, so it'll just be white ... hmmmm ... think I just figured it out. The white might be a different tint, maybe??? Anyway, I'll group them. I feel silly not having tried to group them before .. it's the first thing I would do in any other software. Thing is ... no matter what I try in Quark that I know from before ... it doesn't work or apply. It would seem that I've gotten conditioned to thinking it just has to be different in Quark. I live in the PC world ... very different than the Mac world guess I must have gotten programmed to stop trying (hahahaha) ... not a good thing. I haven't ventured into libraries yet, but I guess I will be. Diana

Oh sorry Diana...I just mentioned the transpaprent background or setting the background to 'none' because sometimes when I have to place a credit for an image I put it at the bottom of the image itself with the text in white so it shows up, and leaving no background on it. But as far as captions or cutlines for images I usually stick those right under the pic and group it all which is prolbobly what you will be doing since they are captions. Sorry for the confusion )

I work on the Mac at work and the PC at home...so I get to see both sides. The libraries are kinda cool. I layout 2 papers so I just throw all my add sizes in there and then when I need to do my layout, instead of making each box each time, I pull it from my library set...its just quicker and more convenient! Good stuff! LOL! Anyways...good luck and I hope I didnt confuse you more than help you! Hahaa!!

Library in Quark??? What does the library do? Is it like a library in Dreamweaver where it holds your symboles?

You can tell I never used this feature, huh.

Benjo, I'm assuming that the library in Quark is like Macromedia ... still learning it all though. I wish I could just wake up one morning and know it.

D-zine ... thanks for the explanation. It makes sense ... I think ???? ... I suppose it would make more sense if I was doing this on a coloured background ... then it would be a question of clarity as to whether one used a white or transparent background. For these particular images, it's just going onto a white background with black text. Like I said, it's an article for the scientific journal, so it's only going to have so much flair (if any .... hahaha).

Benjo - you go under File>New>Library (to create an new one) or OPEN to open on you have already made. For one of the papers I do we have about 50 classified sections...all with little headers like "Domestic Autos", "Real Estate Sale" etc...by making these and dragging them into the library to set it up and then saving that...when I need them, instead of copy and pasting all day long I just drag from the library window and drop where I want it. It just kinda speeds up my process a little. I also use it for my ad sizes..its a god sent when I layout our spanish paper! I use it for anything that I know I will have to place over and over bc I dunno about you but sometimes when I copy something it Quark and then paste it...it pastes it in the ODDEST places and I don't always catch it.....NOT GOOD if you have a full page ad and everyone that proofs page such n such has somehow managed to miss the little heading for Autos that happens to be covering the business name on the ad (for example....LOL).

They can be pretty useful at times!

Actually d-zine, I did figure out how to create the library. Later when I started up Quark again, I couldn't figure out how to find the d^%#$^mned thing again. But I did eventually find it.

I did find it useful and I can see how it would even more useful than what I'm using it for, but it did make the process a little more efficient. This magazine article has three columns and I wanted all of the images to be the same witdh (and many ... the same height), so for this time I just needed the size. I also wanted a 'sized' text box to use for the captions for the images. (It's a shame there isn't a caption feature). I've used captions with word processing software since the early 90's (I know you probably didn't want to hear that).
