Maya or Photoshop?

I am really just starting out.
But already it seems to be that you can do a lot of the cool 3d shadowing that you might do with a true 3d Modeling software
(like Maya ) in photoshop.
For example, can anyone tell me how I could do this sort of box-like shadowing and shading like this:

This is not Maya. and looking at what appears to be a file folder, its not that complex. If it were maya, the glassy blue balls would have shadows inside of them from the silver thing above, and the glare on the blue balls would be different. Looks pretty flat really, like it was created in a vector program, maybe a combonation of vector work and some Photoshopping. The type of shading / shadowing, can most certainly be achieved in PS.

I agree. Also, if you look at the folder it has some harsh points like it had been slapped together in a vector program.

that "box-like" shadowing is also called a gradient, and the reason it looks so flat is because the illusion of the light source is completely wrong. Looks like that was made in Fireworks or something with alot of presets to me.
