Photoshop is now a "family"
From Designorati.com:
Quote:
A few weeks ago at Photoshop World, John Loiacono (Senior VP/Creative Business Products at Adobe) revealed the new “Photoshop family” of products, complete with logo, which encompasses the various Adobe products branded with “Photoshop”:- Photoshop CS3 Extended
- Photoshop CS3
- Photoshop Lightroom
- Photoshop Elements
- Photoshop Album Starter Edition
I think it’s been obvious for a couple years now that Photoshop has constituted a family of products: Elements has been around since mid-2002 (launched with Photoshop 7) and Lightroom has been rightfully positioned as a Photoshop sibling even in its beta stage, before it was renamed “Photoshop Lightroom.” This year’s Creative Suite 3 release created a second version of Photoshop, CS3 Extended, with specialized features for various industries such as medical imaging and architecture. This made it even more logical to group the products as a true “family.” ...

So what does all this mean? Nothing really, but it looks like Adobe is trying to separate Photoshop away from being just another application within creative suite. We discussed the new Photoshop logo coming down the pike (the one that looks like a blue "P" or a chat bubble). The article goes on to talk about how branding concept is a little too late, but interesting nonetheless. If you want to see Adobe's page promoting this family campagin, it is located here.
What do you think?

Adobe Marketing once again trying to justify their paycheck.
I'd buy a family of fonts. All unique yet integral.
But I would only consider Photoshop and Lightroom as standalone programs, not part of a 'family' that includes 2 toys and an amped version of the same program.

The logo already looks ten years old and too much like speech bubble logos.
Usually, the speech bubble signifies social computing of some type -- like a comment function, group commenting and voting like Digg and so on. Although I get the "P" part of the logo, I'm thinking the customer impression will be something other than what the designer intended.

I was once told that the way that Adobe runs there operation is that they tell the coders on the photoshop camp and the illy camp that it is a competition and that they are out to gain the 100% market share. Which is why they handle certain things a bit different (color palletes). If that rumour is true than I could only see this as the next logical step in differentiating themselves from the rest of the CS pack...

Oh goody... Soon we will be able to purchase the "Photoshop Family" as one suite, and the "Vector/Layout" package will Illy and Indy, as a seperate package, each for the cost of our current all-inclusive CS suite.
I don't really get what they're selling here. We all know that Elements and Album are just dumbed down versions of Photoshop capabilities, and that Photoshop is a dumbed down version of Photoshop EXtended (or more appropriately, Extended is a beefed up version of the original). If you have one, you don't need the other. What's the point in this?

Interesting... So really, it's just like a real-life family, isn't it?

You have exactly 6,000 posts, D-Frag. I just thought I'd take this moment to point that out.

I think it's funny how people use Photoshop for everything (page layout, graphics and photo editing). It's simply an editing program for raster images. I work at a small print shop and I see many page layouts come in that were created in PS and the text in particualar is very distorted. I think this is why Adobe charges so much more for PS and they have run away with these many versions.
I will say this, from what I've noticed PS Lightroom is just a program for Photographers to "develop" photos and does a completely different job than Photoshop.
