Good working font family.

For business engineering sales for mostly trade show, print and some web.
What do you think of this selection of fonts. Some are on the wish list some have. The idea is to have a good selection of typefaces from each.
Overkill? Any that are too redundant or cliche?

Akzidenz Grotesk
itc avant garde
Caslon Pro
Eurotstyle
Folio
ITC franklin Goth Std.
Frutiger
Futura
Gotham
Garamond Premier Pro
Gill Sans
Helvetica neu
Trade Gothic

I believe that Helvetica Neue is an absolute must have!!

I think the overall list has alot of great fonts on it. So I would approve of these selections.

I don't think you need that many sans serifs. If your budget only stretched to 13 families, I'd add a slab serif in there and knock out a sans serif.

Great thread, thank you!

Most of these fonts mentioned above are 'purchase only' right?

Thank you.

They all are. Homemade free fonts are a no go for me. (and for most I suspect) because
1-90% of The free homemade ones are junk- just odd stretches and ligatures added.
2-The freebies don't normally have the variety of typefaces you need.. light, bold, black, italic, extended, condensed, etc..

But just those 13 families could be thousands of dollars if getting variety packs. I have Clarendon slab. Maybe it's my inexperience but I really don't like ANY Slabs at all.

mlmcasual,
Thank you.
I do understand your point completely.

Unfortunately, I'm not at the position (just yet) to be able to purchase fonts, but I wish that I could- maybe oneday soon.

Many free fonts are for personal use only. Not a good look for a designer.

There are various places you can search the net for "value packs". I only consider open-type. Fortunate for me, I deising for a specific field (engineering sales). I honestly don't know how freelancers that have to have to use different font types do it budget wise. When you consider a SINGLE font with a good variety often costs 300-500$

budafist,
I agree.

They are expensive from what I've seen, but I know it's well worth the cost in the long run.

Good list. Univers is my fave but I wouldn't add it; you can get bogged down with too much choice, so lots of sans serifs isn't necessarily a good thing. Anyway, like my wife says, it's how you use it that counts.
