Ideally you should really wear your own briefs, and hygienically speaking it is best to change your briefs every day anyway.
Seriously, I used to take all the old junk mail and recreate it, better it etc. Any menu items, business cards, flyers, free newspapers. I used to sit for hours redesigning them all. You could probably get a bunch of flyers/business cards from a local supermarket shopping wall, but you know, don't take the last one unless you plan to use the service - that wouldn't be fair.
I also used to take poorly created menus from take-away spots and recreate them and show them to the staff as a redesign option. Some of my redesigns were even bought and printed by the fast-food, I'm talking about chippers, chip and fish shops, burger vans, etc.
It wasn't great work, but got me started and introduced to all the software fairly quickly. Of course, back then I didn't have the internet to source material or seek advice, so it was all about lending books from the library and buying books etc.
There's plenty you can do if you visit local churches, hospitals, pubs, etc. to do some designs for them in pretty quick turnaround times, and make some money out of it.
