MP3s are a compressed WAV file. Why would you want to do that?

Yeah, flash loves MP3s. Double check your MP3 to make sure it's good. And when you're importing it, make sure to import it to the LIBRARY and not the stage.

You have to drag your music clip from the library to the TIMELINE, not the stage. It will appear in whatever layer you drag it to as a blue waveform. For a little more control over the sound, create a new movieclip and drag your sound to a layer in that clip. Make sure you add as many frames as it takes until you see the blue waveform stop. Now back on your main timeline, drag an instance of your sound moieclip to the stage and give it an instance name, like soundClip_mc. You could assign a button to soundClip_mc.play(); or soundClip_mc.stop();

There are some very cool things you can do with soundObjects as well, but that starts to get pretty advanced.
