You're a Graphic Designer...

I was asked yet again about my job last night... "so you're a Graphic Designer - do you design graphics?"

The clue is in the title but actually perhaps we need to be re-named? After all we brand and name Clients and their products all of the time and yet our generic title is not quite right?

Any ideas?

Most of my clients are graphic designers. . . they can use Word and Publisher and supply me with jpgs to enlarge to A1. . . Today I shall be a brain surgeon.

I'm in such a weird sub-niche of graphic design that I can't even explain to non-designers what it is that I do. I'm in over-the-counter pharmaceutical packaging production. If I tell people I work in packaging, they think I created the dielines or the concepts for the artwork. I try to explain that I don't come up with the designs (other agencies to that) or the structure (the packaging engineers do that), I just do the production. I try to tell them what production means, but I usually get a lot of blank stares. That, and I work for an agency in New York City, but I work on-site exclusively for the pharmaceutical client in New Jersey. It all gets a bit confusing.

I might as well tell people I work in cryonic crystallic metallurgy. I'd probably get less questions about what I do. If they inquire further, I could just reply with, "It's technical."

Maybe I should just say, "I HAVE PEOPLE SKILLS!"

Q: So, what do you do?
Me: I work for a printer...
Q: What do you do there?
Me: I work with the computers...
Q: You going to your Mom's for the holidays?
Me: ...

I love being a graphic designer. Free stuff is great. I once got 3 large trays of ice cream when I was doing an ice cream brochure a few years ago. The client was in and was asking for us to have it ready for Thursday. I said "We'll get it done if you drop some free ice cream in for us", jokingly. The next day he delivered loads of ice cream. I then had to get it finished by Thursday. But at least I had ice cream.

And nobody comes near me when I'm in Arts and Crafts corner, they know I have a knife and I'm not afraid to use it.
