Printing in InDesign
Is there a way to keep working in InDesign while a project is spooling to print?

You could export to PDF first though, print from acrobat and keep working in indesign.

That's a thought, but the only problem with that is it takes just about as long to export a PDF as it does to print, and either way I can't go into InDesign and work on anything else until it's finished doing it's thing.

It shouldn't take that long to PDF?
You could try printing in batches, like 1-10, 11-20, etc. might take a bit longer to print 400 pages if you have that many - in which case 1-50, 51-100 etc.
Might help

Yeah, it may take as long to pdf as it does to print so I only print from pdf because I have made a pdf to send the client already.
How long are we talking here? Is it possible just to save all your printing to print out during your lunch break or something?

That won't help. InDesign itself will be busy prepping the file for print and will not be available to open or edit any other files in the meantime. If I'm not mistaken (and I suppose I could be) this is the case with any program. Buda has the best advice I think, to wait until you'll be away from the computer for a little bit anyway to start the printing process. Unless of course you have a second computer to work on a separate InDesign file.

have a cup of tea and relax! surley it doesn't take that long to print, what size is your document and how many pages are you talking i'm guessing it's image heavy? maybe try optimising you images more, and it'll print alot faster...or upgrade your computer..
