Portfolio as a blog instead of a website?
I'm considering making a portfolio using wordpress or blogspot. Biggest reason is that our website hasn't been updated in years because my web skills are absolutely retarded. I don't enjoy web design enough to upskill. I don't want to offer web design to my clients. Just illustration and design.
I feel like if the portfolio were in blog form I could update it easily even with WIP and it would be more fun. I'm not going make it "a blog" though and write about other people's work (unless I really, really want to).
I also like that we can get feedback and comments.
Thoughts? Pros/Cons?
Does anyone else have a blog as their portfolio/website? Or do you know of any portfolio sites like this?
I just found another reason for doing this, my current hosting plan expires on 30/06/2010.

You should look into indexhibit.org, it's a minimal platform for portfolios that you can customize if you know a bit of css. Plus it's free. Check out some examples on the site. I think you have to install it onto your own hosting server tho.

T^3, that's cool. Bookmarked for further study.
Buda, we're experimenting with a blog "portfolio" at work. It's more of a marketing tool for my department though, a place for us to showcase current work, educate clients about new printing techniques and talk about things like editing and getting approval for copy *before* sending to design. Right now, the hardest part is getting the other designers to talk about their work!

lol. I don't mind talking about my work. But finding the fine line between what is interesting to you and what is interesting to your readers is something different

How about Wix.com? Lets you drag and drop, update etc... and link to your own domain for a fee. It might look a bit more professional than a blog.

I have seen some very nice portfolios done as blogs. Unfortunately I can't point you to one. But it works pretty well IMO.

When I was planning my wedding several years ago I got stuck on some wedding photographer blogs who used them to promote their businesses. I shamefully still follow them today because it's was so easy to get attached to these people's lives, how they progress professionally as well as personally. Even though I didn't hire them (they were light years beyond my budget), I know that they did secure several clients through their blogs. I think a lot of wedding photographers use blogs as a way to promote their current work. I bet you could make it work for you too. Come to think of it, a couple of popular graphic designer blogs are Jacob Cass and Nick La. You might want to check out their sites to see how they do it.

Not sure if this is exactly what you're referring to but I was viewing this one earlier today and think it's incredibly well done. It's a skinned word press blog.

If you're running on your own webhost, there are a lot of different gallery software packages for free out there, such as Gallery2, ZenPhoto and Coppermine. I'm sure they're all pretty easy to install/configure.
Also, as far as blogs go, if you're using your own webhost, you could check out b2evolution. I've been pretty impressed with the way their software has grown over the last few years.
All of these options are free, BTW.
