You can do this by selecting the corresponding framewith your graphic) on the timeline, then go to modify > conver to symbol.
Give it a name then go to modify > break apart.
Once the symbol is broken apart, it will look like a bunch of 'dots' on the graphic.
From there you can edit and erase certain areas as you wish. You can also draw over it and maintain the areas you like, and it will still be on one seperate file.
If you plan on editing the picture over a series of frames i.e., making it disapear slowly or something like that, the you don't have to convert it to a symbol before you break it apart.
Personally, I like to convert all of my graphics to a symbol since it makes things easier as far as organization goes.
But yeah, modify > break apart is what you want to do.
