Illy 10 - how to make knockouts in redrawn letters transparent for web instead of white - [solved]

I hope that I am explaining this right... I'm not sure aboutsome of this terminology.

Iam redrawing some logos which will be posted on my company's website. I can not take the time to identify all of the different fonts used in them, so I'm redrawing the letters as well.

When I redrawletters with eyes or knockouts in them (like"o"), I outline them, then outline the knockout and fill it with white. That would be fine if the background on the webpage was white, but it's actually an odd yellow color. I can't just choose to have the fill in the eyes be transparent, because then the color from the outline shows through and you can't see the eye at all.

Is there a way to flatten the image and make the eye transparent so the web background shows through?

I'll attach some pics since that should help clarify...

What I needed to do was select the enitre letter and right click on it, then choose 'create compound path'.
In case anybody was wondering... I figured I'd share.

you should be using compound paths for all letters(and objects) that need knockout holes. im actually surprised you were doing it with a shape and fill color. did you take any design courses? compound paths was one of the first things i learned when i was being taught illy.

Was there a reason for that post? Sure wish ppl would stop being so god damn judgemental on here. First of all she is self taught, which takes a hell of a lot more discipline than sitting in a classroom having someone teach you....

design courses don't always cover Illy, retro. They don't necessarily cover ANY softwareat all.None of mine did.

I have had to learn Illy on my own from what I've done at work. Sorry you thought the question was trivial.

Edit: I've answered enough questions on here that I feel like I should be able to ask one of my own without being told that I'm ignorant. It might be basic, but I haven't had to deal with it before.

Surprisingly, my college did teach Illustrator intensively. I had already known my way around Photoshop long before college, but Illustrator was foreign to me and that's where I obtained my love for the program.

Now that I think about it, early on in the course I asked my teacher what the different between Photoshop and Illustrator was (in other words, why use one over the other), and he didn't have a good answer for me and said both were practically the same. Now that I look back upon that knowing what I know now, that's kind of sad.....

i didnt mean for the post to sound derogatory. thats why i SERIOUSLY asked if you took any courses. when i said you should be using compound paths when necessary, i think i am generally right, and i just posted that for others to read as well. when i said i was surprised that she didnt use them, i meant because ive seen how good her work is, so it actually surprised me. and when i said one of the first things i learned in illy was compound paths, was because it was. if anyone was being negative, it was you neuro. you flamed me and took what i wrote the wrong way (and i wouldnt be surprised if you did so just because im a noob).

i never called you ignorant morea, but if you truly felt that i did, then i apologize.

retro, I appreciate the clarification. I've had art classes but never any formal software training... I've had to pick that up myself along the way. Not fun. Trust me! [img]/emoticons/dry.gif[/img]

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the written word, it can be hard to tell exactly how take certain comments... especially from someone you don't really know. (so indirectly, it IS because you're new here... but it's not personal. Try to be patient... we really are a good bunch once you get to know us! And don't take offense to neuro - he was just defending my 'honor' as it were... we've had some troll problems around here lately, as you may have noticed!)
