Opening Quark 6 files in InDesign

First, PLEASE don't hate me for posting a topic I'm sure has been posted a million times already. I apologize for being a moron and not being able to figure out the correct search words. I've done a few searches, but I haven't been able to come up with the correct combination.

A link to a previous thread or if someone is willing to throw out ideas/suggestions/answers, it would be GREATLY appreciated. [img]/DesktopModules/dotNetBB/emoticons/worshippy.gif[/img]

Questions:
1. Can you open Quark 6.0 files in InDesign W/O saving down to Q4? (Oh, please tell me there's a way around this!!)

2. Can you set up fraction like in Quark, where you can simply click a 'type style' as 'fraction' and it automatically changes to a preset that you adjusted (does that make sense?)

3. Is there a way to append style sheets? (Character/Paragraph styles in InDesign?)

We are in the process of the big switch -- I'm super excited, but there are a few of these issues I would feel much better knowing there was a fix for.

As far as your first question goes, there is no way to import Quark 6 into InDesign that I know of...I'm frankly surprised that Adobe InDesign CS didn't add in support for Quark 5.

I don't do much trapping, can't answer your second question.

As for the third, you can certainly make paragraph and character styles, very cool for when you work with XML documents and append them to the different elements.

First, ID support OT fraction support (if you type '1/2' it will automatically drop in the character for that fraction, if available.)

As for 'fraction' as a typestyle, I don't think so. Here's something from the help files that might help:

Superscript/Superior & Subscript/Inferior

Some openType fonts include raised or lowered glyphs that are sized correctly relative to the surrounding characters. If an openType font does not include these glyphs for non-standard fractions, consider using the Numerator and Denominator attributes.

Numerator & Denominator

Some openType fonts convert only basic fractions (such as 1/2 or 1/4) to fraction glyphs, not non-standard fractions (such as 4/13 or 99/100). Apply Numerator and Denominator attributes to these non-standard fractions in such cases.

We use the Fruitiger OT font on almost everything, so I found the fraction thing -- and that's really cool.

But... when I place copy from Word, then select a group of text and apply a character style to it (in the Frutiger OT font), the fraction doesn't change.

And I gladly figured out the style sheets thing. Very nice... Thank you!

Someone should develop a plugin that would import Quark 6 into InDesign CS. They would probaby become rich. When it just has to be converted, I have to go the long route from Quark 6 to Quark 5 and then Quark 4 and finally InDesign CS. Whew! Then you have to make sure things don't reflow once it gets into InDesign after all that.
