Is Pantone+ the only ref used by printers now?
I've been thinking about "upgrading" my Pantone swatches to the Pantone Plus series since the old ones are completely out of stock, but have read many, many negative comments from designers and printers alike from various forums, so I'm having some doubts...
Do you guys think that the series is a "must" by now, in terms of proper designer -> printer communication, or will the old system still be widely used for a while in your opinions?

The Pantone Plus series is just the latest update.
The only complaining you hear from Printers is that the stupid books are now chromatic instead of numeric. If you want to find a specific swatch, you have to look it up in an index to find the page number. Annoying as all hell, mostly cuz I have to find my glasses to read that tiny page index.
Also, the paper stock they've used is much thinner. Careful when handling your tear out chips that you don't inadvertently change the color by getting fingerprints on the paper.
And there have been a few slight color adjustments, as always. When using new chips specify that you are using the plus book or send the tear chips with the job. We still use the old books too. In fact we keep books 2 sets back from current. You might want to specify if you're using those too. As I said, a few colors were tweeked a tad.
I hate Pantone.

Last I heard Pantone had not released any CMYK build numbers for the plus colors, though that was at the introduction of them, they might be out by now. If not then it could be real headaches if you are not printing the spot ink.
Most printers here (East Coast US) are not using the plus colors - I hear that they are popular in the textile industry.

I don't think they are a must at all. They are another option, but by no means are they required. We don't own any of the plus books and I can't remember any jobs that we've printed that used colors that weren't in the Pantone or Trumatch books we already own.

The pantone plus colors are the same pantone colors (except for a few very minor differences, no more than any usual update.)
All the books are out.

They've just rebranded and chromitized the book.
No big whoop.
PMS 111 is still PMS 111 in the plus book.
You may be confusing Pantone Plus with Pantone GOE. Now GOE is a royal pain, requires a whole new inkset for spot printers, and seriously offers nothing more than another alternative to the regular PMS colors.
I begin to suspect though that the chromatized Plus colors are a step toward combining the two systems at some point. At which point I may just vomit.

But it'll be such pretty, chromatized vomit!

We live and die by the Pantone spot color palette in our neck of the woods. It's so much easier especially when it comes to corporate identity. I still use the previous books but I imagine I'll have to invest in the thin paper version eventually. With zero whining, I'll just unscrew the books and reorganize the pages numerically. NOS older books are still available online from many sources.

You can't unscrew the books and reorder the pages. I have one on my desk right now.
Some of the pages, the numbers go up in sequence, like 372, 373, 374, 375, 376, 377, 378. The next page the numbers go down in sequence;580, 579, 578, 577, 576,575,574.
Even better, the next page after that starts with 5807 but the next number down is 5797.
It ain't that easy.

Which is why I'm going to resist replacing my current book as long as possible.
