Photoshop CS - Arrow not changing for me!

OK, I'm on Windows XP, SP 2, and I have the Adobe CS. When I open Photoshop, I'll be able to work in it just fine for a bit, but sometimes, my cursor changes to what looks like the white arrow, and won't do anything. If select another tool (like the lasso tool), the cursor stays like the white arrow. I can't click anything or do anything with the mouse while in Photoshop (other than select other tools, use the Main menu, but can't manipulate the image in any way), but if I move off the program window, the cursor acts just fine. I looked at the Adobe site and all it said was to upgrade the video drivers, which I have done, but it still does this. It happens at sporadic times and sometimes I'll go days without this happening. Can anyone help me? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Thanks for the help!

I'm on a Mac but when I have weird things go wrong with programs sometimes if I will trash the preference files and restart the application it will solve the problems. I'm sure Windows has something similar to this.

Is this a recent thing? Do you also get problems watching video? is there anything suspicious in your task manager? Out of curiosity (as 1984 noted) how much RAM do you have? Have you recently upgraded your ram?

I have 1 gig of ram, and yes, it is a recent issue. I have run Hijack this, and there is nothing out of the ordinary there.. I have not upgraded my ram recently. Really haven't done a whole lot different. Tried dumping the prefs, but it still happens.

Is this happening with both large and small documents? hijack this is useless, if you're relying on it to find/remove spyware/adware. Try SpyBot or AdAware ... both offer free download versions.

Have you also made sure your HDD has no corrupt sectors ... your system could show symptoms when photoshop uses a particular part of the disk for virtual memory, if you do have sector corruption. Also try making sure your registry is clean ... heck, if you've tried eveything, backup your system, re-install, and restore your important documents and settings.

as far as any kind of spyware goes, you may want to read over the article D-Frag wrote after his recent experience. I found it quite helpful!

its a piss off when ur trying to work and the cursor doesnt work anymore.... i used to have the same problem as u .... but i fixed it... i think i got a solution.... its definately got sumthing to do with ram and such
how big is ur hd? i have 160 gigs but its separated into many drives... the one i start cs on has like 1 gig free... so i goto my prefs and set the primary scratch drive to a bigger one like one wiht 10 gigs free.... now i dont get the problem anymore... try it! it might work.. i dont know

i think a gig of RAM is more than enough so its definitely not the problem...you can try defragging your HD...maybe your hard disk is so big but has a lot of fragmented files...according to a troubleshooting technique, check the user, check the hardware, then check the software...assuming that you know how to operate ps, and your hard disk is ok...you can reinstall ps and make sure that you uninstall previous versions from your system.....
