Explaining design to the yoof

I have been asked to design a logo for a new youth centre/coffee shop for a troubled area of my city. The lady running the operation wants to get the kids involved (ages 12-20) which i think is a marvelous idea -the only trouble I see is a panel of adults is difficult enough to deal with never mind a bunch of ankle biters!

Any suggestions as to the best way to crash course them in the very basics of our craft?

I'd be tempted not to crash course them at all, the boundaries could really stifle some great creativity they could bring to the project. Explain the message you want to communicate and let them brainstorm. See what happens.

Agreed. They don't need to know the ins and outs - that's your job. Think of them as clients not interns.

12-20 is hardly an ankle-biter.
You might be lucky to get them involved at all.
That's the "La la la, I'm not listening to you" age.

Get them to think simply and in symbols rather than illustrating too much at a time. Also give them exercises to think past cliches.
