Hey Guys! And also, I kinda screwed my life up...

So, I went to school for GD years ago...I never actually graduated and somewhat randomly wound up working in an entirely different field. Recently though I've decided that I kind of hate my current line of work and would like to try to again pursue a career in design...which is basically why I'm here, to get insight on how to jumpstart a career 8 years after giving up on it...before ever really trying. Whoopsie. Anyway, more on this later for sure, I will have many questions for you guys...but for now, just a simple introduction will suffice - my name is Rob, thanks for having me.

Hi Rob and welcome to GDF!

We ask that all new members take a few minutes to read through important threads here and here. These will explain our rules, answer frequently asked questions and explain some of the long running jokes you'll run into. Enjoy your stay.

Welcome.

Would it be realistic for you to go back and finish your degree in GD?

Welcome. I would suggest that you start by looking at local design courses. You may find a lot as changed in 8 years and since you didn't finish, there's even more reason for you to go back to study.

For a variety of reasons, no, not really...

...going back to school is not too likely. For one, I don't really have the money...also, the school I went to in the first place is halfway across the country from where I live now, so I'd have to try to transfer those credits here and basically start over...and finally, I would still need to work, and the career I'm in now is prone to crazy, unpredictable hours (one of the reasons I hate it so much) that would not be at all conducive to going to school, so...there's a lot working against me as far as continuing my studies goes.

Any thoughts on other routes?

If you don't have the money now, then it's probably time to start saving. Sadly, dreams have a price. If you're serious about it, you'll find a way. There's distance or online learning for those that want to work and get educated.

If most/some of your credits transfer, you won't be starting over completely. You could take night classes too, while you work. Not easy, but it can be done.
