Easiest way to do a gradient circle like this?

I cannot achieve this look for some reason.
I have tried working with the opacities in the gradient window but I can't achieve this look.

Is there an easy way to do this successfully?
Thanks guys!

Can you draw the stroke, or create a circle with a stroke, and color the stroke a gradient from red to black? If that makes sense.

I've tried that, but "radial" in the gradient window treats it as a circle and it doesn't get that opacity fade in an arch like that...

Radial gradient (BLACK TO RED starting at where the hard line is) Over a RED ring. Mask out the radial gradient so it has that hard line, and ends where it needs to- And only shows where the ring is.

Black to red gradients have a rather nasty habit of going to pinkish white yuck at the transition point. You may want to consider reverse opacity masks...

Sorry, I'm actually working with blues.
I just meant the overall look of opacity transition like that.

I'll have to look into reverse opacity maks...haven't really worked a lot with opacity masks (successfully)

Sorry...this is going to have to be dumbed down some.
I really don't work with masks or anything in illustrator. And rarely with gradients. I mainly do logos and I like to stick to solid shapes. What is the "hard line"?

This client has asked for a million different complicated things and changed his mind right and left. He really wants this "opacity fade thing"....

ugh

I think you'll want to use the blend tool. HERE is a handy tutorial.
