Convert Microsoft Publisher project

The company I work for has a curriculum that was created in Publisher. Now that Publisher is being discontinued we need to export and convert this curriculum to a new program. It is a fairly large project as we have around 10,000 pages created. What would be the best program to convert this curriculum to? Obviously we would want the conversion as automated as possible with the least amount of work from our end. Any suggestions?

Well support is ending in October 2026.

So, what’s the deal? Was the curriculum create in Publish or Illustrator? Your posts are starting to feel suspicious.

If you want to convert MS Publisher files to a similar layout application, there aren’t too many good options. Luckily, however, one of those options works reasonably well. Markzware makes a conversion tool that can convert Publisher files to Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, or Affinity.

Markzware has been in operation since the early 1990s. The company has a good, long-standing reputation for offering niche software tools that aren’t available anywhere else.

If I were you, I’d convert the files to InDesign, because it’s the industry leader. However, it requires a subscription. Affinity is free (and a very good product), but it’s in a state of flux since the company was sold to Canva, and who knows what the future holds for it. QuarkXPress used to be the dominant layout application in the industry, but was relegated to niche status when Adobe released InDesign years ago.

Similar to what was mentioned in the Illustrator thread, MS Publisher has a few features with no equivalent in other layout applications (even though InDesign and the others have far more features than Publisher). If your 10,000 pages make use of these Publisher-specific features, those things will be removed during the conversion.

Additionally, you’ll need to review every page of the conversion, as there will likely be adjustments to one thing or another on each page.

What I wouldn’t do is convert MS Publisher files to MS Word. That might be a tempting option since they’re both Microsoft Products. However, Word is really an awkward layout app. It’s a great writing tool, but as layout software, it sucks.

I believe they mentioned in their other post that it was in fact Publisher and they got confused. Not sure why the new thread though.

I am at a loss how one can confuse Adobe Illustrator with MS Publisher, although I must admit I have done things more foolish.

I had not seen that.
