Creative Habits That Boost Your Design Career Grow

What creative habits or daily practices have helped you grow and move forward faster in your design career?

Probably not the type of thing you are looking for, but I would say make sure you’re getting enough sleep and spend time outdoors.

I used to take impossible tasks that I didn’t know how to do and then do them.

For example, never made a website before. I bought HTML for dummies and went step by step and created a website right through to hosting it. It served well for a number of years, more than 10-20 even though it wasn’t the best it worked for what was needed.

When I was learning Indesign - I bought books like Adobe InDesign Bible and kept it on my desk, anything I didn’t know how to do I consulted the book - I had other books too.

I guess keeping up to date, follow blogs, tutorials etc. (from reputable sources), I find Creative Pro very good, used to be InDesign Secrets but they merged with Creative Pro or something.

And participating in forums. Replying to topics, even if not knowing how to do it first time, I’d research the problem, find a way and post my solution, even if someone comes along with a better solution.

At the moment I’m teaching myself scritpting and posting solutions in places, with what works for me, and other scripters are correcting or suggesting improvements I can make.

So I guess - spend time learning and getting involved with communities, find peers that can and will give you advice when needed.

Participate and get to know people and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

None that I can think of, other than always pushing boundaries at work and refusing to give up. Any successes (and failures) I might have had during a long career have had more to do with luck and judicious stubbornness than with intentional creative habits or daily practices.

There used to be these things call Trade Magazines. I had subs to all the Sign and Large Format ones.
I didn’t read the articles much (been there, done that and likely done better too,) I just looked at the ads. It was one of the best ways to learn new print processes and materials. I still occasionally look at the online flippy things.

Like Steve, I’m more into disengaging on my down time, not sitting in front of a computer.

This makes me feel nostalgic. I didn’t keep all of my magazines, but I still have a handful. Fun times.
