Font Sizes and Golden Ratio as a Non-Professional

For most of my projects (mostly scholar), I tend to use multiples of 3 for both my font and shape sizes, there’s no real foundation behind my principle (except for intuition and maybe something I picked up by playing Minecraft), but if I had to rationalize my decision, I would probably say it has something to do with 3 being a small prime number that allows me to be consistent with my sizing.

Regardless, I’ve presumed so far that font size is not necessarily as important as the overall balance and harmony of the project, and as long as it fits within it doesn’t matter what size it is (especially since font sizes tend to affect different fonts in different manners).

However, I recently came across a video explaining that it was best to use multiples of 1.618 (the golden ratio) for font sizing.
As far as I know, there’s no real basis for the use of the golden ratio regarding aesthetic purposes (contrary to those of optimization), but I’d like to get a more informed opinion on this, as well as to know what someone more educated would think about my “rule of threes”.

The Golden Ratio is a mathematical oddity. I’ve never viewed it as having much, if any, relevance to graphic design outside of philosophy and the ancient Greeks. Our brains don’t automatically perceive the ratio, but we do perceive halves, quarters, thirds, and perhaps fifths, which can, in many instances, help create layout cohesion, balance, harmony, rhythm, and simplicity. But the Golden Ratio formula below, nope.

As for type, if it’s meant to be read, no matter what else is considered, legibility and readability are always the most important concerns.

I don’t think Pt size is something to build a design system around as it’s not standardized across fonts. A font maker could have their letter positioned taller/shorter than the bounds of the topline/baseline and there is no governing body to tell them otherwise. So the font size number itself is kind of irrelevant to the true height of a letter, you’d have to measure it manually to know that.

Golden ratio is debatable. The famous claim that the Apple logo was designed using the golden ratio has been debunked, although there are several well-known brands that may have intentionally used the golden ratio as part of their design process.

For me, it’s just a reference, and I only use it when a client specifically asks for it. There’s no scientific basis that designs built on the golden ratio are always visually better, or that designs not based on it are worse.

For typography, there’s something called a type scale, which includes ratios like the minor third, major third, golden ratio, and others. You can look it up.

In design, it’s good if you can explain your design rationale, but don’t make things up. If it looks good, it looks good. Sometimes a design needs optical adjustments rather than mathematical precision. If you’re well-equipped with design principles, all that’s left is to trust your eyes.

The ancient Greeks used the golden ratio in their architecture, most notably in their temples. They considered it to be the foundation of perfect aesthetics.

I’m going to push back on this Golden-Ratio (phi) thing even harder.

As kippergoat suggested, “there’s no real basis for the use of the Golden Ratio regarding aesthetic purposes.” The only instance where this might be the case is in a geometric design that uses the repeating nature of phi, but that never happens (unless you’re designing something to show the ratio’s self-repeating geometric nature).

As for the Parthenon being based on phi, it isn’t. Euclid didn’t even discover phi until a hundred years after the Parthenon was built. Depending on the starting point of the measurements, certain features of the Parthenon approximate phi, but various features of almost any design or architecture can approximate phi. The ratio can be retrofitted to accommodate everything from the Parthenon to the Mona Lisa to the Pyramids of Gaza, but there’s no historical evidence to indicate that phi was intentionally used.

There are modern exceptions, though. For example, Le Corbusier intentionally used phi as a basis for some of his architecture, as did other modern architects and designers, but these were modern decisions made by people who succumbed to the notion that the ratio has aesthetic value.

This supposed aesthetic value was a 19th-Century concoction by a guy named Adolf Zeising, who believed that phi had mystical, spiritual, and aesthetic properties. It sort of took off from there with people retrofitting phi claims onto all kinds of things. Here we are, 200 years later, still debating whether human perception can somehow subconsciously detect compositions based around mystical irrational numbers. If graphic design has any persistent myths, this just might be first on the list.

I’ve had a spreadsheet for font-size scaling that I’ve used for years. Depending on the physical size of the product, it provides a consistent set of type sizes across different printed formats.

18 pt might look appropriate on an A3 product but disproportionately large on an A6 version. Having an agreed scale means the type is not resized differently by each person working on the job. Everyone uses the same system the hierarchy remains consistent across the products.

That does not mean the scale needs to follow the Golden Ratio. Increasing in steps such as 1.125, 1.2, 1.25 or 1.333 often produces more practical levels while still giving each level of text a clear distinction.

Starting at 10 pt and repeatedly multiplying by 1.618 gives approximately 10, 16, 26 and 42 pt. That might work for a dramatic poster, but it creates very large gaps for a report or academic document. A smaller ratio gives more useful intermediate levels.

The same applies to using multiples of three. There is nothing inherently wrong with 9, 12, 15 and 18 pt if those sizes suit the typeface, content and format. The system provides consistency, but it should not become a rule that overrides what the text actually needs.

In fact, one client insists on a specific tab stop for all their documents, so people don’t use different indent levels.

My own approach is to establish the body-text size first, taking the typeface and its x-height into account. The rest of the hierarchy is then built from that

Body text
– Bullet level 1
– Bullet level 2
– Additional bullet levels
|
Main heading
– Subheadings
– Additional heading levels

So in the above, Main Heading is based off Body Text - and only Subheadings are set to be based off the Main Heading

So everything is based off the body text, then only change font size of the headings or other settings, like rule above or rule below etc.

Ratios provide a framework, but they don’t decide whether the text is readable or whether the hierarchy suits the content.

On the historical point, the ratio was known in ancient Greece and their mathematics. I love Greece, I go almost every year, I’ve been to Athens many times, I’ve stood on the Acropolis and touched the columns, the steps, and it’s fascinating.

All of their stuff for building came naturally in basic geometry of regular pentagons and pentagrams, where the diagonal and side are related by the Golden Ratio. Euclid later formally described the division of a line in “extreme and mean ratio.” That establishes its mathematical use, but it does not establish that ancient architects treated 1.618 as a universal rule of visual beauty.

They did make deliberate optical adjustments rather than relying blindly on mathematical uniformity. Greek architects varied column profiles, spacing and alignment so that buildings appeared visually balanced when seen from the ground.

A related Roman example is Trajan’s Column elements intended to be viewed from below were adjusted for perspective, and the letters in its base inscription are slightly larger toward the top than at the bottom so that they appear more even to the viewer.

I think that’s more relevant to typography than insisting on one supposedly perfect ratio mathematical consistency can establish the system, but optical correction is still needed to make it look right.

The same kinda applies for other design things. You do not always place something at the exact mathematical centre of a page you often position it at the optical centre instead. A rough starting point around 70% of the distance from the top of the page to its mathematical centre, rather than at 50% of the full page height. Of course it still depends on the shape, visual weight and content.
