David Johansen of the New York Dolls (maybe you know him as Buster Poindexter or as the Ghost of Christmas Past from Scrooged) dies at 75.
I read about David Johansen, but I wasnāt sure how many others remembered him. I hesitate to mention this, but a Time Magazine or Newsweek review (I canāt remember which) convinced me to buy his first solo album. To this day, itās the only vinyl LP that I threw away. It was truly awful, but Iām sure others will disagree.
I remember āHot, Hot, Hotā. I barely remember the NY Dolls. I didnāt like the scraggly screech in his voice and he always struck me as a Mick Jagger wannabe. Then he reinvented himself into Buster. Still sad to see he passed. From what I read he had a really rough time with cancer. RIP David.
I saw them once live in the 70s and they were great, although the crowd was largely unimpressed. They invented glam rock which made some people dislike them with the makeup and sparkly costumes. In that sense at least, they were true innovators.
I know T his is not the thread to be starting a debate, but on that one, I have to beg to differ. Glam Rock originated on this side of the pond ā one of the few that did, granted, but Glam Rock is ours!
I always thought T-Rex and Bowie invented Glam Rock. I could be wrong of course
I always associated the New York Dolls with punk, not glam rock. Then again, I never cared for either and didnāt pay much attention.
I didnāt care for their music during their early years, but they had some gems in their later years.
You are absolutely correct.
How do I know? A couple of years back, just for the hell of it, the band I play with did a really OTT glam rock gig. Not our usual, genre, but we went for it.
LED video walls with animations and videos. Huge hired-in PA. Lighting by the guys who the week before had been doing the Biffy Clyro tour. A year in the planning and organising. A huge amount of work for one fun evening. It really was fun too.
Yep ⦠and such a great series
That and other Badfinger songs remind me of my first serious girlfriend. Geeech!
Are all the other members of the original band gone now, too?
Yes, Joey was the last surviving member
Yes, itās one of my favorites too. I understand George Harrison had a huge influence on the band, and Iāve always thought the guitar in āNo Matter Whatā sounds a lot like his work.
They were signed to The Beatlesā Apple Records.in fact, think they were the first band they signed up.
Badfinger and Bad Company. I cannot tell one from another.
Iām not big on celebrity news, but I did read an article this morning about the Hackmans death. Very sad situation.
