recently I have been informed of a design competition called “99designs”, I am looking to expand my portfolio and see this a a great opportunity to do so, however I know little about the website and how to enter a competition. any guidance would be highly appreciated

You won’t find a whole lot of love for crowdsourcing sites here. Maybe someone will jump into say something good about them, but it won’t be me.
