Advice on client request for raw files

In some cases I would agree, but for myself in this case, client accessibility to master files causes many concerns and opens up a gamut of risk and confusion which can result in expensive consequences, for example, compromising brand integrity or publishing outdated material. I think PDFs are a reasonable compromise (for ‘security’ purposes) if I happen to one day random be beamed up by Scotty.

Bit surprised.

I just give them whatever they want.

Couldn’t be arsed arguing over it.

Same!

As @Just-B said, unless your contract states otherwise, by default, the law gives you ownership of the files. I’ve had clients ask for files for the same reason and never use them and still have me do the work.

Just because they have the files doesn’t mean they have the software or skills, and it doesn’t necessarily mean they will take their business elsewhere (although they could!).

I charge anywhere from 25% to 100% of the job fee.

Also, never provide the fonts or stock images, unless the licenses say you can.

And they never do (well almost never…)

That’s why I love opensource.
