I hate it.
Do it to your own family photos, but leave history alone.
Not only color added, but edge sharpened and brought forward (compare to the bit of sleeve of the next soldier.)
This was in NPR today. I’ve been seeing more and more of this image enhancement lately, and being someone who was never allowed to retouch historical photos, that’s sort of ingrained. Present history as it was.
I don’t mind seeing some old photos colorized. When I am in the mood I like to colorize old Hollywood starlets. But, when I see a historical photo retouched it hits differently. It makes me sad. It doesn’t add anything to the photo, it cheapens it and reduces the impact.
But, then again there are lots of things this is happening to these days … I’m getting way too old for this world it seems
