Design Career: Which Path to Begin?

Is freelancing a better career start for designers than a full-time job?

In my humble opinion: No.

I learnt a lot of valuable things in my first years as an employee. For example, I learnt how my hours were billed to clients and how to prepare for a pitch.

What ever makes you more comfortable !, if you need experience in a company then go for junior or if you want to become freelancer you make experience your own !

I highly recommend finding a full-time job because the freelancing market is oversaturated, which makes getting clients extremely difficult.

If you want to work on your own, start by taking courses in sales and marketing.

You should have 5-10 years of experience in the field working under the guidance of a mentor before considering freelance. Consider it an apprenticeship.
Or you can try to re-invent the wheel. Every day. On your client’s dime. Do it wrong often enough and you’ll get the reputation you don’t want.

I tend to agree with others. You will learn an awful lot from having a full-time job. That said, given your other posts, I would not object if you wanted to freelance while looking for a full-time job. That also means that your next post would, most likely, be asking how to get freelance clients.
